From its inception, the League of Women Voters has worked for equal rights and social reform. In the early years, the League was one of the first organizations to address such issues as child welfare, maternal and child health programs, child labor protection and laws that discriminated against women.

Employment opportunities in modern, technological societies are closely related to education. Therefore, the League supports programs to increase the education and training of disadvantaged people. The League supports federal, state and local efforts to prevent and/or remove discrimination in education, employment and housing and to help communities bring about racial integration of their school systems.

The LWV supports equal rights for all regardless of sex. The League supports action to bring laws into compliance with the ERA: to eliminate or amend those laws that have the effect of discriminating on the basis of sex, to promote laws that support the goals of the ERA, and to strengthen the enforcement of such existing laws.

It is valuable to have programs that would inform individuals of their civil rights in education, employment and housing and of the opportunities open to them.

Opportunities for purchase or renting of homes and for borrowing money for housing should not be restricted because of discriminatory reasons such as race, color, sex, religion or national origin. Responsibility in the nationwide effort to achieve equality of opportunity for access to housing resides with government at all levels and with the private sector — builders, lending institutions, realtors, labor unions, business and industry, news media, civic organizations, educational institutions, churches and private citizens.

Working together we can seek to secure equal rights and equal opportunity for all and promote social and economic justice, health and safety in our county, state and nation.

True Essence of Christmas

Related image

This Christmas season, it is important for us to bear in our minds the reason why we are celebrating this yuletide season in the first place. In this month of December, it is a must for us to remember that our Lord came in this world in order to save us from our sins; He came to redeem us from the wickedness of this world.

We also have to recollect the fact that our Lord God is humble being born only in a manger. This is the message that is sent to us - we must learn how to humble ourselves, no matter how rich or financially wealthy we are because Christ himself symbolizes humility. Even though He is a son of God, He did not demanded for a special “birthing place” or become “man” in a wealthy family; instead, He was born in a poor family.

Anyway, the essence of celebrating Christmas season is not to have a house full of Christmas lights, having a tall and beautiful Christmas tree full of gifts underneath it and giving expensive gifts. Christmas basically means sharing what you have, not just the material things but also those that can only be felt like a warm, tight hug, a simple thank you, showing our appreciation to our loved ones and forgiveness among others.

Whichever of these are important to you this holiday season, just remember that it’s the thought that counts and that love is the most important thing in the world. When love governs our hearts and minds, everything will follow and we don’t need to wait for Christmas time to share our love to other people.
